Tumblr Seeks New Life With New Live Video Feature

Tumblr Seeks New Life With New Live Video Feature

While the Big 4 of Social Media, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat continue to evolve and add-on new expansive features to their respective platforms, Tumblr for many has faded into the shadows both on a personal and business level. After Yahoo failed to resurrect the mini blogging site and after years of being labeled too uncensored to control or properly monetize, Tumblr pops back into the conversation with new live video capabilities.

Does this now inject Tumblr into the realm of credibility again? It’s hard to say. For those that never left and still use it to this day, there can very well be a new sense of engagement for followers. Yet, I don’t expect to see a flock of new users signing up solely for that feature.

Here are a few factors to keep in mind with the new Tumblr Video feature.

  • Tumblr does not have a native streaming video option. In actuality, live video is enabled through YouNow, Kanvas, Upclose, and YouTube.
  • Your videos live on Tumblr, so not only can they be reblogged but users won’t miss out on your content just because they missed the live broadcast.
  • Tumblr will notify your followers when your video goes live, and even pin it to the top of their dashboards. This favorable placement of live content will be a big aid in getting this new feature out to the people smoothly.

There are definitely people who think there is a solid shot at business gains via this new tool. Simply Measured shares that position and gives a little insight here.

While Tumblr is not big in my marketing plan it pays to know what is going on around in the digital world and for those that do utilize that platform it’s a major upgrade that can connect people to their followers in a brand new way. Live video is clearly the next frontier and Tumblr hopes it’s the path back to success.

Are You Down To #BlackOut???

Are You Down To #BlackOut???

#Blackout

It’s March 6th and depending on what your level of online engagement is you may or may not be aware of the movement taking place. As you read this there is a social media #BlackOut over many of the major communicative platforms. Originating from Tumblr this #BlackOut is happening across Twitter, Facebook & Instagram as well. This #BlackOut is a digital call within the Black online community to post nothing but images of themselves. No not in basic selfie fashion, but rather fill your respective timelines with the beautiful faces that make up life as a Black person.

Today’s #Blackout is a social statement against a system that historically demonized the features, traits and behaviors of Black people only to accept the exact thing later via a more “mainstream” persona/image. The Internets have come to refer to this as “Columbusing”, the attempt to discover and claim something that was already in existence.

I find it interesting that Tumblr would be the breeding ground for this event. Functioning as a mini blogging platform that takes a little from all other sites and with very limited rule and regulations, Tumblr at times really feels like the wild, wild west where it doesn’t take much to be searching for one thing and suddenly fall neck-deep into pornographic content of all times. (Sometimes you come across that content on purpose lol). Either way many businesses have deemed Tumblr too explicit to successfully monetize. Yet, among all the questionable material there is an expressive community ripe with passion for the images and portrayal of our people and I must say it’s cool to see the energy directed in this manner.

#Blackout is active and I’m happy for that.

This is social media in 2015 so it goes without saying what many of the predictable negative reactions will be.

Isn’t this racist? – No its really not. It’s people taking a day to spotlight themselves in a space that generally doesn’t and would rather focus on cute pets then people of color

Why can’t we showcase everyone? – Technically speaking that’s what takes place everyday which falls into the Eurocentric images that have defined what “beauty” is supposed to be. The goal is to get away from that.

How about a #WhiteOut? Just turn on most mainstream TV channels or their respective sites. A #WhiteOut is essentially media as usual.

It is what it is. Hopefully the sensitive few wont derail the committed many. Bigger then that I hope this singular expression sparks something bigger. I hope to one day see a real ownership of what we are and what we contribute to the world. It’s taxing watching everyone live via your cultural creations and natural ways while you get someone beat down for those very some things.

So yes, #Blackout in whatever way suits you. Our beauty comes in all shapes, forms and styles. Embrace it  and own the Internets.

Samurai Skills: Know The Value of Your Service

Samurai Skills: Know The Value of Your Service

value

The other day I was asked a  question about how much I would charge to do some social media content syndication for someone. The duration of time for this service would be for 3 months.  Truthfully there would be a  few more details I would need to get if it was actually me but in this case I kept it simple. I give a ball park figure for what I would charge to commit to 3 month of multiple platform activity. It turned out that is was an indirect comparison inquiry because she then told me the amount she was offered to do that work. It was way below what I would accept for 1 month let alone 3 months but again that’s me and if asked for social media resume I can provide it.

In this consisting evolving era of digital marketing you have to set your worth and be ready and able to validate it. It’s one thing if you’ve got the free time and just want to help a friend do something. In that case sure, help out and don’t sweat the financials is that’s how you feel. For those that work in this space and aren’t in a position to give away time for free you need to know what position you are negotiating from.

The reality is that many people still do not see social media posting as real work. You get on, hit a few keys, hit enter and that’s it. Nothing can be further from the truth. With new sites popping up daily every platform has its own rules and intricacies to fully benefit from using them. Who’s creating the messages that are posted? Are they formatted properly? If replies come do you engage or notify someone else? How big is the network you’re interacting with? Not to mention that 3 months doing anything is a serious time commitment.  These factors plus many more go into the equation that produces your value. It’s not the same for any 2 people so if this is what you want to do then sit down and create your own rate sheet. There are plenty of sources online to keep you in an appropriate range for your level of experience.
