Media Updates – Sharing New Content and Features

SMS UPDATES

It’s been a while since I’ve taken time to share some of the things I’m doing. Fatherhood has changed the way I work and my ability to focus on “me” is in a bit of flux. Slowly but surely I’m reestablishing my digital presence, getting my creative juices flowing and putting content out into new spaces. It feel’s good. I view 2014 as a pivotal year. It was in that year that I covered my largest events, wrote my biggest (at the time) article

Thinking back a bit I view 2014 as a pivotal year. It was in that year that I covered my largest events, wrote my biggest (at the time) article and landed my first client as a consultant. I’m using that year as a reference point for the things that worked for me professionally and how to implement them within my new reality.  That’s within the social media industry and beyond.

On the writing side of things, I’ve had a few recent pieces published via Complex. Sports connects to folks on so my levels so it’s cool to share thoughts within that space.  Here are mentions from my Knicks and Warriors stories.

I’m also looking to bring a new outlook on Fatherhood to the forefront. Classic Daddy narratives often paint us in a position of voiceless, emotionless workers. As more dads are taking on the day-to-day hands-on duties of parenting in addition to work, it needs to be understood and respected that we are just as invested in the lives of our kids as anyone else.

In the last week, I’ve been featured by a couple of pro daddy platforms. It’s all about Max and whatever I need to do to keep him smiling.

Good Afternoon everyone👋😍 Meet @NightFall914 & his handsome son Max. This great guy knows the meaning of happiness. You can clearly see his efforts are well received in the joy his son has. A true man, a great father and positive role model. Let’s show him a warm welcome for being such a great Father on his journey as a father. I am proud of you @NightFall914 continue to be the amazing man you are. God has blessed you brother. Congratulations once again!!! The other feature was a great Q & A interview with DadofDivas. This is something I really want to build one going forward.

It’s a new world for me in many ways but with a new motivation to press forward, I’m excited about the future. Also as I have reached and helped many of my readers, I ask those of you viewing this to please reach back to me if you see something that you think I could a match for. Online features, writing, public speaking. I’m wide open to opportunity.

SAMURAI RIDES: HAPPY HOLIDAYS W/ THE 2017 MAZDA 6

SAMURAI RIDES: HAPPY HOLIDAYS W/ THE 2017 MAZDA 6

maxda6cover

It’s the most wonderful time of year!! Or it’s the perfect opportunity to get your mind off the crazy happenings in the world. Either way welcome to the holidays. Your Social Media Samurai is riding clean into Thanksgiving and Christmas with new 2017 Mazda 6 Grand touring!!

Mazda has won a very solid spot with me over the past couple years. They’re cranked out a number of great rides offering a little something for everyone. You last caught me driving the gorgeous Mazda CX -9 down in Atlanta for my Nomadness Tribe Reunion weekend. This time we’re turning up the family vibes and cutting down the scale of things. With Thanksgiving dinner seeing about a dozen people followed by some QT with my son Max and my parents, I didn’t need as big a vehicle as the CX-9. My northeast antics were ideal for the new Mazda 6. When a quality 4 door sedan can still drive you that sports car feel you’re in for a good time.

Naturally the first thing you have to ask yourself is whats new about that 2017 Mazda 6 from last years model? If you left it up to a simple eye test you might say not too much. Although with the sleek design of the 6 that’s not a bad thing.  You do get new headlight to front grille trim lighting. It’s a mean look at night but most of the 2017 changes took place inside the ride. You’ll notice the steering well is now the same design as the CX-9 and includes heating functions for those chilly winter nights. The driver info display screen and the flip-up dash design both have been upgraded to color screens from their preciously unimpressive black and white scheme. The real killer in appearance is when you step up to the Grand Tour Premium package. You get the choice of black or almond-colored nappa leather seats with titanium-gray piping and stitching! Not to mention the extra black trimming. Mazda never hands back on luxury interior design options.

As great as that is, now having my son in the ride with me, safety is as high on the priority scale as ever. I raved about the Mazda 6 safety features in my 2016 review. This time around the i-Activsense powered anti-collision sensors are able to identify pedestrians and  smaller moving objects in addition to other vehicles. The auto brake emergency features now is active in a 9mph to 99mph range. That’s up 9mph on the high-end. Mazda has also tightened up steering reactions on corner with their G-Vectoring control system. I definitely felt it and with these other improvements Mazda driver can continue to feel safe on the road.

Yes, yes all this sounds great but nothing beats that hands on, real road riding. Smooth handling on the 95 north as I head from Philadelphia on Thanksgiving eve set the pace for me. During a very active traffic period the Mazda 6 had me feeling I was in a different place. Heated seats for the backed up Black Friday traffic kept me in comfort. Christmas tunes played on XM radio, setting the holiday mood on BOSE speakers. I had no complaints.

Max and I had a little photo shoot and the Mazda 6 let Max nap on the way to the studio and back which made things that much easier for me.

The Holidays get stressful for many people. Crowds, lines and traffic statistically send the road rage incidents up but while some folks lose their minds, I’m moving about with 100% peace of mind in the Mazda 6. Mazda has found a great balance between power, style and luxury. What’s more is that they have done so in pretty affordable fashion. You can hop over to the Mazda website for an even deeper look into the 6. I’m sure you’ll see something you like.

YMS 2016 Conference Hits New York City

YMS 2016 Conference Hits New York City

unnamed-2

As fast as you can blink there are new apps, new sites and new platforms for communication and social interaction. No one has there fingers on that digital pulse like the 16 to 24 year old portion of our society. Millennial influence on business is what directs and shapes so many industries and last month in Brooklyn, NY, London-based Voxburner launched a 2 day event focused solely on the thoughts, ideas and business desires of that demographic. In addition to that I had the pleasure of being a part of a panel speaking  on the importance of community management in this new digital market.

There were dozens of companies represented at YMS and professionals across numerous fields sharing their insights on the current climate of business from mainstream media news trends to creative platforms for upcoming artists. Sprinkled about Industry City, YMS provided refreshments, lounge and work space both inside and out. Free headshots could be had while various brands showcased their latest products and services.

I was glad to be there representing Nomadness within the Travel industry for the first time.

There is so much that took place. Voxburner recaps their event here. Check out the images, sponsors and downloadable presentations provided. I’ll be sharing my panel discussion very soon too.

THE STORY OF THE SOCIAL MEDIA SAMURAI – OVERSEAS SAMURAI FROM NY TO DUBAI #UAETAKEOVER

THE STORY OF THE SOCIAL MEDIA SAMURAI – OVERSEAS SAMURAI FROM NY TO DUBAI #UAETAKEOVER

#UAETAKEOVER

It started out as a cute name to show my affinity for the Internet and Social Media. Now it is my calling card and the key to new opportunity and business. Closing out the Summer of 2015 I took another step toward growing the brand that is the Social Media Samurai. The United Arab Emirates became the latest venture as my digital skills would take me across the globe for the first time ever.  I make things connect and this time the benefits were first class or in this case, business class.

Even as I type this more thirty thousand miles above the earth I can’t help but reflect on what has gotten me here and what it will take to push me further. This is not an end goal but rather a new beginning to prove what I’m capable of.

Working In The Sky

Since January of this year members of my Nomadness Tribe have visited the amazing cities of Abu Dhabi and Dubai due to the infamous #GlitchGate flight sale of Christmas morning 2014. Even though neither was on my personal radar, I too took advantage of the amazing opportunity. While still half asleep I cashed in on a $220 round trip ticket and booked it for nearly 9 months down the road. My random scheduling would turn out to be a major professional  come up for both myself and the Tribe, IF I held up my end of the bargain.

Wine Induced Thoughts In The Air

Let’s call it a real life test of the methods I’ve preached for so long. I am an advocate for the power of social media and its ability to free people from the shackles of stationary employment. Location independence is the name of the game. Yet, it’s one thing to be based out of New York and bounce up and down the East Coast. The scenery changes but my mobile plan is constant, wifi is easy to locate and the time zone is the same. Even if business takes me to the west coast were only looking at 3 hours of difference. It is an adjustment but not a difficult one. When you aim high life will make you show and prove. In this case it was facilitating contacts with international partners in a foreign land with limited wifi, no cellular service and 100+ community members creating social content in real-time that I needed to funnel towards the proper channels. All of this happening while being 8 hours ahead of my New York base. Thankfully multitasking is what I do. Yet I thrive to do it better. Progress is never ending.

Dubai Yacht Dance Off Tribe Vs Crew!!!!!

This trip was equal parts leisure and learning. From yacht to rootop I was on call for my people.  Although as I look back on it I literally had NO time to myself the end results made it well worth it.

YPlMxOpPknKBZlqsapDeMcwBC795G1alZohz1G3igkwajxeA3r39SRKhJMvWVwuoIIuLidhDEeM64EQ_ti0KkY

Lessons were learned about what I can do and what I can improve. I’m returning home a far more skilled Samurai. The wow factor of this trip will fade. The interest people have in my business class upgrades will pass, but the connections and business ties if properly managed can go so much farther. For Nomadness and myself I had no choice but to perform. No one else was there but me to keep the brand’s name in good standing. Sometimes you have to just put yourself out there.

In regards to Nomadness I made a promise to myself and my partners. I would not truly consider myself a Nomad within the Tribe I crossed the Atlantic. This venture was my stepping up into those ranks. Growth doesn’t stop once you leave school. Life is a class with no set graduation date and predesignated syllabus.  I’m going to savor passing this latest test as I prepare for what is to come.

The Social Media Samurai Steps Up to the Big League with T-Mobile Simply Prepaid

The Social Media Samurai Steps Up to the Big League with T-Mobile Simply Prepaid

#ChangingPrepaid

Faithful readers are aware of some of the moves and sacrifices I’ve made over the past year or so to ease my transition from a standard 9 to 5 worker to more online social media focused work. One of the more frustrating adjustments was leaving a long time relationship with my cellular provider for a more budget friendly prepaid phone. My days of effectively navigating the mobile Internets were halted. I found ways to get by but it was a definite adjustment. One of the things I told myself was that I would not return to a major provider unless it had everything I needed AND was affordable. So it was requested and now it has been granted  as the T-Mobile Simply Prepaid plan is literally #ChangingPrepaid. For a mere $40 I’m getting unlimited talk, text and data w/ monthly options. This gives me everything I need but now with the control of paying for exactly what I want, when and how I want.

Generally when you think of prepaid phone options you assume that you’ll be giving up access to top of the line phones. If not that you usually have to deal with suspect network coverage. T-Mobile is really changing the way people think about the concept of prepaid.  Another point that sealed the deal with me was learning that I could now be apart of T-Mobile’s 4G LTE network without having to go through credit checks or be tied into another contract. That was all I needed to know to get up and get my new phone from Walmart.

#ChangingPrepaid (xx)

#ChangingPrepaid (1x1)

I was literally in and out in 15 minutes. No contract rules or clauses. No one poking into my financial business. I love the ease of it all. I was back home and activating my phone within an hour of when I left for Walmart.

It’s been a minute since I’ve had a smart phone and a strong network to give me seamless online access for my mobile needs. Instead of being plugged in at all times I’d gotten used to operating in selected periods of time based around WiFi availability. To have that constant connectivity back is relief. As a content creator that prides himself on mobility, working at various locations, I can’t wait to be able give true real-time posting again. The Galaxy Avant that I picked up is essentially the smart phone version of the Galaxy Note that comes everywhere with me. This move will really increase efficiency and manageability for me. I’ll no longer need to bring a large tablet everywhere to live tweet and update events.

#ChangingPrepaid

On the spot Foursquare/Swarm check ins at my hotels or tweeting in a Uber ride to a tech conference. Checking my emails anytime, anywhere is a luxury that I gladly welcome back.

After spending the past year operating minute to minute with a tracfone, getting the freedom of unlimited calls and text back is a digital breath of fresh air. Simply Prepaid is a plan that I’m definitely going to share with friends that I know are in the market for a phone change. Especially with the quality of T-Mobile’s international coverage too. Well you guys see whats going on with me on the gadget front. What do you guys think about one of the best companies in the wireless game expanding into prepaid plan options?

The Story of the Social Media Samurai – The Break Through

The Story of the Social Media Samurai – The Break Through

#SocialMediaSamurai

It’s insane how time flies. I can still remember sitting down to write the previous “SMS Story” post and really going back and forth with just how transparent I was going to be about my professional situation. In this “fake it till you make it society” it’s not the easiest thing to do to admit struggle while you’re still going through it. In the end I bit the bullet and shared my battle with unemployment and how that essentially forced the creation of The Social Media Samurai. That was back in May. Now it’s the end of December and I’d like to give a little progress report on my recent activities.

This Spring/Summer really kicked things off in a positive direction for me as I embraced the ideology of “Asking” or in terms more of us are familiar with, “Closed mouths don’t get fed.” As Spring turned into Summer I realized that there is a lot out there for us if we simply ask for it. I don’t mean anything crazy but if you have the legitimate background then what’s to lose in asking for something or directly proposing a business initiative. A prime example was my interaction with MegaBus. This national bus service is something I used frequently as is, so why not throw my hat in the ring to do some work with them. A simple email pitch led to a collaborative dealing that took care of my travel for all the major Summer events I intended to go to which  included Toronto and Atlanta. Yes they were lengthy rides but “Free” makes things so much easier to deal with. In addition to that it was another step in realizing that what I wanted I could get if I was willing to step out of my comfort zone and take some chances.

The true moment of progress would come in late Sept. I was still pushing for work in the social media field that extended beyond the world of blogging. First off a friend told me to stop slacking and update my LinkedIn page. I can honestly admit this Samurai was swinging a dull blade in regards to that site. It wasn’t until I stripped my page down and refocused it to highlight my online work that I realized what I was missing. My social media background was now on greater display then it ever has before. It was within 2 weeks that I was contacted for new work. I was asked to join a team for a new television program as a social media consultant and content writer. This was my first step into the area of social media business I’d been aiming for. After that things would pick up quickly. Not too long after I was called in to join a social media community management team for a project I thought had been long since cancelled but was now live. Both of these roles were remote which filled in another key element of what I want in my ideal career path. Location independence is the end goal where a quality living can be had without being tied to an office. Yet just as I was sitting down to plot out these 2 projects a third offer came to me in the form of a 9-5 HR role. Now as you may remember I hadn’t dealt with the standard corporate world in about a year so I had to think on this. All things considered I saw I’m opportunity to max out new experience, start repairing my financial standing (we’ll touch on that in another blog) and pretty much end my year off strong.

#SocialMediaSamurai

Professionally I feel good about where I am. I’m not where I want to be but I’m closer than I was at this time last year. Life is directly pointing me to the path I need to travel and I’m not fighting it. The story of the samurai continues on to the next chapter. I’m looking forward to it being written.
