New Podcast Launch – Who’s Listening EP.00

New Podcast Launch – Who’s Listening EP.00 & EP.01

WhosListening00

Funny how life goes in circles. Years ago I was a pretty solid fixture in the internet radio/podcasting/online streaming space. I co-hosted a Toronto-based online show. I made regular appearances on a number of pretty popular online shows and even on my personal blog I was doing a video blogs very heavy.

Now, to have stepped away from that and then see you that same media blow up with a current surge of podcast activity I won’t lie it’s bittersweet. I think I have a habit of being too far ahead of the curve and several times I’m so far ahead that I missed out on the chance to monetize what it is I’ve already been doing.

With that being said, Facebook over the past week just rolled out a very interesting feature. They announced this back at the tail end of last year and now it’s finally hitting. They announce the audio only feature within Facebook live so if you’re not someone who is camera ready at the moment but has a lot to say, has a voice that needs to be heard or a voice that the people want to hear this is the perfect thing. Obviously, you would do your recordings for the benefit of a live audience at the same time your material is saved which you can direct people back to or share across social media.

This past week I introduced “Who’s Listening”.  Episode 00, the pilot episode. This is me stepping back into the podcast world with this first episode. I spoke about the Yankee captain Derek Jeter having his number retired along with a few Yankee memories. I touched on the NBA playoffs as well. In addition, there was social media talk about virtual reality and “Smart” tech like voice recognition.   The main topic of the show was the  “black women are trash black men or trash” t-shirt fiasco that hit the internet last week. I definitely gave some opinions on that so without further ado drop down and take a listen to the pilot episode of  Who’s Listening.

NYC Hosts Word of Mouth Marketing Summit – [WOMMA 2017]

NYC Hosts Word of Mouth Marketing Summit – [WOMMA 2017]

womma logo

The New York Times building played host the annual WOMMA Summit this past week. The summit featured speakers from a number of major brands like MGM Grand, Tito’s Vodka, BuzzFeed, Wendy’s and many more.

WOMMA which stands for word-of-mouth-marketing presented two days of panel discussions, informative sessions that dove into various aspects of Social Media communication, content creation and the overall effect of digital activity on society. Many brands spoke about how they craft their respective voices along with the teams and systems that go into creating the content that the consumers see on a daily basis.

The online comedic wit of the Wendy’s brand was center stage for that chat courtesy of their V.P of Media, Ads & Social Brandon Rhoten.

Univision EVP Jessica Rodriguez opened up the Summit speaking on ownership of responsibility within her digital teams and the effects of “influencers”.

They also had a number of sessions that spoke not so much to a specific business purpose but how Society as a whole interacts with social media. As social continues to grow and evolve around us it’s playing a greater role in and having increased influence on day to day life. Topics such as prejudice, discrimination, fake news and more were touched on via author Emanuel Rosen

In addition to that WOMMA also addressed the issues of influencers in a few respective sessions. Kevin Knight of Experticity broke down what actually makes an influencer on various levels of scale, what their responsibilities are and how do they best express and deliver on the message of a respective brand.

It’s very informative to get a look into what larger mainstream businesses are doing and thinking in regards to social media. Learning what their methods are that result in the content that they create and what are the do’s and don’ts are that they apply to their own digital spaces. These things are important to be aware of as many of these brands set the trends that up-and-coming businesses and entrepreneurs tend to follow. Not to mention we see on a daily basis many mainstream bands continue to get social wrong and put themselves in positions where not just are they acting in error but then they are put on full display for the world to see just how out-of-touch they are. Truthfully speaking in today’s climate with social media as established as it is you should know the ramifications of the things you do in our business. Nothing is secret and customer service is now a spectator sport. How you treat your customers is no longer lost within phone calls and snail mail complaint letters.

Nicole Portwood of Tito’s Vodka says it best. “We focus on being as human as much as possible vs. being so product-driven.”

This sentiment does well in summing up the overall tone of the WOMMA Summit. Word of Mouth Marketing essentially is a reminder that no matter how far social media advances it is the social aspect, the direct person to person element that carries the greatest value for businesses to succeed. WOMMA isn’t stopping with the summit either. There are a number of events upcoming via WOMMA to continue the conversation of how our communication is evolving and impacting our business.

Branding Management During Times of Crisis via Evita Robinson

Branding Management During Times of Crisis via Evita Robinson

Evie Awesome

There is turmoil in the streets of the United States. We are in the midst of a period of social unrest that the U.S hasn’t seen in years. Recent and continuous killings of Black men by the police have pushed the nation to a crisis point that is being noticed far beyond the continental U.S.  As an entrepreneur it is often a difficult balance to represent your growing brand while dealing with troubles that transcend business. The time, energy and commitment to your business could easily be undone if you act incorrectly during this time of high emotions and sensitivity.

SAMURAI SIT DOWN: TUMBLR SENSATION CHOKESNGAGS [NSFW]

SAMURAI SIT DOWN: TUMBLR SENSATION CHOKESNGAGS [NSFW]

chokesTOP

Samurai Sit Down was created as my way to introduce various people who caught my eye and are making names for themselves in today’s new digital world. I’ve chatted with artists, media personalities, and more, but this time, I decided to dive a lil deeper into the gritty social media underbelly. What I’m talking about is Tumblr. If any space online exists as a free for all its Tumblr. You can go from cute kitty videos to the most explicit of amateur or professional sexual material. I’m no angel and I’m not  a stranger to Tumblr, which is where I encountered ChokesNGags, also known as “Aunty Chokes” by her devoted fans and followers. Sex is everywhere online but every so often you come across someone who isn’t just flashing the masses for attention. CNG has lived a life that is made for the big screen. Her candor and transparency has attracted many to seek her advice for issues too uncomfortable for others to hear.

So today things get a little NSFW as I sit down with the infamous ChokesNGags.

*****

First off, thanks for taking the time out to have this conversation. Let’s dive right into things. How/Why/When did you start the ChokesNGags online persona?

Back around 2011 when I was living in south Philly bored out of my skull. One of my friends was always on Tumblr; there’s some pretty entertaining shit on there, so he helped me set up my own account. He gave me a few follow recommendations and I kinda took it from there. The lack of censorship and filter on sexual content was really intriguing. Like, you mean I can talk about getting cum in my nose AND see around the way girls busting it wide open without risk of being deactivated or anything? NOICE. I discovered a judgement free platform so I took advantage of it. It really just started as a bunch of endless posts about needing dick and going on about the dick I just got. People seemed pretty interested so I talked about my ‘adventures’ more and more. I think the readers assumed I could help because I spoke of similar situations. Like, what else does she know?? The questions just started coming in like crazy. I never said “hey I think I’ll start a sex & relationship advice blog”…..It honestly just….happened. I’ve always wanted to help people, particularly young, black women and girls; so I just happened to stumble upon exactly what I wanted to do.

Philly so you’re originally an East Coast girl but you’re in Cali now. What caused the relocation out west and how do you like it?

Yup, Jersey girl here. I was between jobs in Philly and the guy I was dating at the time offered to help me out. He had the pull to get me a job in any major city and assist with the move. I considered NYC but it was too safe and close to home. Most of my family is in NY. This was a kick ass opportunity so I wanted to take full advantage of it. After a lot of thinking I said fuck it, I’ll move to LA. Less than 2 weeks later I landed in LA and hit the ground running. I love it here. It’s a tough city to survive in, that’s for sure, but I don’t plan to leave anytime soon. I’m far away from things that I once knew and I like that.

The Majority of Consumers Don’t Buy Celebrity Hype

The Majority of Consumers Don’t Buy Celebrity Hype

lil-wayne-galaxy-s7-commercial

From as long as I can remember watching TV, brands have looked to hook your attention and spark your interest in their products via the cosign of high-profile personalities and main stream celebrities. The celebrity endorsement is a class marketing method that essentially tries to tell you that if it’s good enough for this person then you should want it too and for years this has worked. Apparently, the present age of social media, viral stars and more direct customer engagement is rendering this approach to business a little obsolete with the millennials. Check out the info below via Collective Bias detailing some recent market data.

Collective Bias, a leader in shopper-focused influencer marketing, published results of a large-scale national survey investigating how U.S. consumers’ online behaviors impact in-store purchase decisions. The survey, fielded to nearly 14,000 adults in early March, found that 30 percent of consumers are more likely to purchase a product endorsed by a non-celebrity blogger than a celebrity. Of that number, 70 percent of 18 to 34 year-olds had the highest preference for “peer” endorsement.

Infographics-LinkedIn-Led

Only three percent of consumers would consider buying a product in-store if it was endorsed by a celebrity, but celebrity testimonials were just one of the traditional advertising vehicles to rank low among respondents. Those surveyed cited TV (7.4 percent), print (4.7 percent) and digital (4.5 percent) advertisements as the least influential forms of communication when shopping for products in-store. The results point to a growing ineffectiveness of traditional advertising and the need for brands to embrace alternative forms of marketing to drive sales.

Society has a growing number of media options that enable them to avoid ads all together and even if they do watch them, their influence comes more from whats trending and buzz worthy online vs the new commercial drops on TV. It should be a lesson learned that at least with the young adults of the world you need connection on a relateable level over star power to seal the deal.

Social Media Samurai Year In Review: The Best Of Samurai Sit Down 2015

One of my favorite things about The Social Media Samurai is having a platform to introduce people doing good work and giving a place for people to express themselves devoid of the media politics that often make true expression a frustrating situation. This year I had some amazing  conversations with a number of people that really left a mark on the culture for 2015.

CW9jasAWAAAzwpq
Hip Hop Artist Nitty Scott MC & Media Personality Cleverly Chloe were 2 of the ladies featured on Samurai Sit Down.

Sometimes I take for granted that people will just always see what I’m working on and I have to remind myself to remind others what I’m up too. With so much material out there it’s easy to get lost in the static. Anyway, I wanted to just share 2 recent posts and 1 major content source.

This week my first Op-Ed for Social Media Week went live!

In addition to that I wrote short piece on medium.com which is clearly inspired by the current frustrating social climate in the United States.

Medium is a platform that I’ll be using express views on certain topics outside of what www.thesocialmediasamurai.com deals with. It’ll be a lot more personal material too.

Finally, as networks growth I always meet people who didn’t know I write. If you’re one of those people check out my digital portfolio for a solid overview of my work.

So, if you have a few moments check out the new links above and my portfolio.  I’m always open to working with folk if the need is there for content creation.  Enjoy you’re day, please share the content and don’t forget I’m currently covering Art Basel in (rainy :/ ) Miami.
