THE STORY OF THE SOCIAL MEDIA SAMURAI – OVERSEAS SAMURAI FROM NY TO DUBAI #UAETAKEOVER

THE STORY OF THE SOCIAL MEDIA SAMURAI – OVERSEAS SAMURAI FROM NY TO DUBAI #UAETAKEOVER

#UAETAKEOVER

It started out as a cute name to show my affinity for the Internet and Social Media. Now it is my calling card and the key to new opportunity and business. Closing out the Summer of 2015 I took another step toward growing the brand that is the Social Media Samurai. The United Arab Emirates became the latest venture as my digital skills would take me across the globe for the first time ever.  I make things connect and this time the benefits were first class or in this case, business class.

Even as I type this more thirty thousand miles above the earth I can’t help but reflect on what has gotten me here and what it will take to push me further. This is not an end goal but rather a new beginning to prove what I’m capable of.

Working In The Sky

Since January of this year members of my Nomadness Tribe have visited the amazing cities of Abu Dhabi and Dubai due to the infamous #GlitchGate flight sale of Christmas morning 2014. Even though neither was on my personal radar, I too took advantage of the amazing opportunity. While still half asleep I cashed in on a $220 round trip ticket and booked it for nearly 9 months down the road. My random scheduling would turn out to be a major professional  come up for both myself and the Tribe, IF I held up my end of the bargain.

Wine Induced Thoughts In The Air

Let’s call it a real life test of the methods I’ve preached for so long. I am an advocate for the power of social media and its ability to free people from the shackles of stationary employment. Location independence is the name of the game. Yet, it’s one thing to be based out of New York and bounce up and down the East Coast. The scenery changes but my mobile plan is constant, wifi is easy to locate and the time zone is the same. Even if business takes me to the west coast were only looking at 3 hours of difference. It is an adjustment but not a difficult one. When you aim high life will make you show and prove. In this case it was facilitating contacts with international partners in a foreign land with limited wifi, no cellular service and 100+ community members creating social content in real-time that I needed to funnel towards the proper channels. All of this happening while being 8 hours ahead of my New York base. Thankfully multitasking is what I do. Yet I thrive to do it better. Progress is never ending.

Dubai Yacht Dance Off Tribe Vs Crew!!!!!

This trip was equal parts leisure and learning. From yacht to rootop I was on call for my people.  Although as I look back on it I literally had NO time to myself the end results made it well worth it.

Lessons were learned about what I can do and what I can improve. I’m returning home a far more skilled Samurai. The wow factor of this trip will fade. The interest people have in my business class upgrades will pass, but the connections and business ties if properly managed can go so much farther. For Nomadness and myself I had no choice but to perform. No one else was there but me to keep the brand’s name in good standing. Sometimes you have to just put yourself out there.

In regards to Nomadness I made a promise to myself and my partners. I would not truly consider myself a Nomad within the Tribe I crossed the Atlantic. This venture was my stepping up into those ranks. Growth doesn’t stop once you leave school. Life is a class with no set graduation date and predesignated syllabus.  I’m going to savor passing this latest test as I prepare for what is to come.

Nomadness Travel Tribe Invades NYC To Celebrates 3rd Anniversary

Nomadness Travel Tribe Invades NYC To Celebrates 3rd Anniversary

Nomadness

This past weekend over 200+ world travelers converged on New York City for the Nomadness Tribe Anniversary Weekend. Arriving from all areas of the U.S, Europe, South America and more, Tribe members came to celebrate the annual gathering of this new age social collective. With just under 9000 members worldwide it’s been amazing and at times overwhelming to be on the ground level and directly involved in keeping things together. It’s one thing to attend an event. It’s a completely different matter organizing and putting the event together.

I’m thankful that the good folk at Kia via DriveSTI put me behind the wheel of the new #KiaSorento because the space was definitely needed. The running around, stress and energy that went into this years gathering was something else but it was a small price to pay for the enjoyment of the Tribe. From getting the Venue to Music to Drinks there is a behind-the-scenes story to everything that few will ever know. Yet, when it was all said and done I’d do it all over again. Well, most of it.

Read more after the jump and see some of the beautiful images from the weekend’s festivities.

Source Magazine Brings The 1st Annual #SOURCE360 to Brooklyn

Source Magazine Brings The 1st Annual #SOURCE360 to Brooklyn

#Source360

This past weekend The Source aimed to connect with a new generation of Hip Hop enthusiasts by bringing a well rounded representation of the culture to the people. Comprised of discussion panels, open street dance parties, markets, fashion shows and performances, #Source360 was a weekend celebration and educational event that plans to become a major fixture in the fabric of Hip Hop in New York .

#Source360

The 3 day event offered up an array of speakers from various areas of Hip Hop and Urban culture. Business minds, media personalities and artists of all types gathered to speak on topics like Blogging, Pop Culture, Reality TV, Police relations and International influence. Throughout the course of the weekend #Source360 ran an Unsigned Hype showcase for a number of up and coming talents

A number of venues hosted events this weekend to spotlight underground artists. Giving the center stage to the ladies, BAM cafe hosted a night that blended the classic with the new as Nitty Scott MC treated the people to a few joints before giving up the stage to the legendary Roxanne Shante. She wasted no time reminding folk that she still has it and delivered a few words of support as well.

The climax of the performances was the massive Saturday night concert at the Barclays Center featuring Bone Thugs n’ Harmony, Dip Set, Lil Kim and the Wu Tang Clan as the head liners. It was a 90’s era celebration of classic tracks.

You include a gigantic sneaker summit, fashion show, lounge and networking social via #HerSource and you have more Hip Hop enjoyment in one place than one can fully enjoy. For it’s initial run, #Source360 is going to be a highly anticipated event for years to come.

My Moral Issue With Outsourcing As An Entrepreneur

My Moral Issue With Outsourcing As An Entrepreneur

Outsourcing

Looking to grow and improve in my business I try to read when I can. It’s great to pick up ideas, concepts and ideas from other professionals who have reached heights I’m trying to get to. The various books I’ve read talk a lot about automation and cutting back on things that tie you to a sole location. That leads to the topic of outsourcing. For those that don’t know, outsourcing in this situation is having certain duties within a business moved out of the country and handled by cheaper foreign labor. This is common practice within many industries for dial in customer service departments, tech support and more. The idea is to cut or at least reduce costs on labor and office space. From a purely bottom line business stand point this move makes plenty of sense. It frees you up to move around with office restrictions and is much less to pay the foreign workers but is it right?

Many of my peers speak about the desire to not only escape the 9 to 5 format of business but to also not be like the cold heartless corporations that so many of us deal with. It’s often said that the goal is to make a living doing what you love and truly enjoy. To reach that goal you have to work from the bottom up. You have to pay dues and grow. That often means doing lower level work that could hypothetically be done by others. So, once you get to the point of having your own business do you use your position to put on people you know and help them come up or do you outsource to save money? I personally don’t think there is a single right answer.

If level of productivity is equal and it’s simply about cost what would you do? Would you send that role(s) overseas to cut costs or keep the position domestic to pay it forward?

Nomadness Travel Tribe Invades Atlanta For Annual Summer BBQ Weekend

Nomadness Travel Tribe Invades Atlanta For Annual Summer BBQ Weekend

 Nomadness

Loyal readers should know of my affiliation with the Nomadness Travel Tribe. The international travel collective prides itself on a strong sense of community. This fuels the meet ups that are held frequently through out the United States and around the world. In the midst of all that I felt it was needed to have an event that can bring everyone together in a casual relaxed manner. The Anniversary party is a big lavish gathering so in turn I wanted to capture that energy with less pomp and circumstance. This gave birth the Nomadness BBQ. There’s no grand genius involved in suggesting a summer bbq but I did believe that in true Nomadness fashion it could evolve into a true event. This summer in its 3rd year the Tribe BBQ took that step from a one day get together in NY to a full weekend of activity in Atlanta, GA.

There’s something to be said for what motivates people into action. As I prepared to head south to Atlanta I was questioned by a few friends. “You’re going to Atlanta for a BBQ?” The concept didn’t click with some people and I don’t fault them for it. If you’re not in the Tribe and don’t have that emotional investment for what it stands for that it was an understandable stance to have. From all over the nation love and positive energy made it’s way to Atlanta. Every negative thing that the world consistently tries to tell us we are the Tribe repeatedly disproves. It’s a sort of retreat from the daily stresses of life. It’s an escape to experience the life we all are working to live daily and that’s a life free of the constraints of others, surrounded by people that get what you’re really about.

For 3 days we danced, laughed, supported, networked and broke bread. It was a weekend of reunions for many and first time introductions for others but it was all love no matter what. The images below give you only a peek into the great time that was had by the 125+ Nomadness Travel Tribe members that attended. It was a special time and created memories that will remain near and dear to me as well as many others. #NomadnessBBQ

Hip Hop Makes It Mark at NXNE’s 20th Year Celebration

Hip Hop Makes it mark at NXNE’s 20th Year Celebration

Pusha_T_NXNE_Main
Via Urbanology

Celebrating 20 years of existence the North by North East festival in Toronto looked to bring more Hip Hop to the people than it ever has in previous years. Across the city headliners like A$AP Ferg, Killer Mike & EL -P along with Juicy J presented a dope mix of international known and established talent. Connecting with the indie spirit of the festival there were a number of shows highlighting emerging talents both U.S and Canadian based. The Best of Show NXNE showcase via A3C stood out as one of the best with DJ’s like Austin Millz of NY, artists like Earthgang of ATL and Immerze of Vancouver getting the crowd active later into the night.

Personally in terms of pure Hip Hop showmanship and energy the build up around Vice Island’s feature performance from Pusha T ranked at the top for me. Toronto island hosted the day long mini festival of music, food and fun presented by House of Vans and Vice. The Isle offered a solid array of quality musical performances throughout the day. Everything from the reggae tunes of Mikey Dangerous’ to the energized antics from Future Island set the people up for the main event. Pusha, working the stage solo, would deliver over an hour of street and mainstream hits for the hundreds in attendance. Many NXNE regulars spoke of Hip Hop not having that big a presence in years past. It seems that this may be a turning point for the festival.

I remember the period when Hip Hop first moved into the SXSW scene. First it was a few secret events and performances and now it’s a total take over. With the Toronto Hip Hop evolution fully in motion I’m curious to see in upcoming years if that trend holds true up north.

#BringBackOurGirls Rallying Cry Hits NYC, TDOT & DC

#BringBackOurGirls Rallying Cry Hits NYC, TDOT & DC

#BringBackOurGirls

When the need to do the right thing evolves from the mere pounding of key boards to physical mobilization of the people it’s always a great moment in social media activity. Yesterday, the first Saturday of May was claimed by the citizens of Toronto Canada, Washington DC and New York City in the same of solidarity with the Nigerian masses at the heart of #BringBackOurGirls. The  international eye has turned to the plight of 250+ school girls abducted in mid April and now demands are being made for more forceful actions and higher priority to be placed on this matter. When you think that an issue isn’t being driven the attention it deserves you do whats needed to raise the awareness and yesterday was a great example of that.

As more and more people unify their voices and more of the mainstream media presents the situation to the masses I hope that as many of these innocent young girls as possible can be rescued and returned to their families. Even bigger then that is the need to address how a climate is allowed to exist that such a thing could happen in the first place. Truthfully this is biggest then just this one event but one step at a time. Society in this growing social media age has shown an inability to maintain focus on multiple issues at the same time. With Donald Sterling/Racism chatter still hot in the American media I hope we don’t lose our way an either of the social items on the table.

After the Jump you can view some images from the #BringBackOurGirls rallies that took place yesterday.

Nomadness Travel Tribe Celebrates 2 Year Anniversary

Nomadness Travel Tribe Celebrates 2 Year Anniversary

Nomadness Anniversary Party

This past weekend travelers from across the United States and around the world descended on New York City for Nomadness Anniversary Weekend. For the 2nd straight year the final weekend of September saw the celebration of worldwide travel, entrepreneurship and social media fueled fellowship that is the Nomadness Travel Tribe. 6000 members strong and growing the Tribe has many things to celebrate.

#Nomadness Pre Party

For me a taste of the festivities began Friday evening as Tribe member Rene Abdo of held a ribbon cutting for the launch of her MRA Investments company. The Tribe has always balanced its globe-trotting ways with serious business development in a multitude of areas. Rene would actually be pulling double duty this weekend as she would be presenting Tribe creator Evita Robinson with the Powerhouse Trailblazer Award at the Women Doing it BIG event the next morning.  As for me, with things finishing up at THE DL hosted MRA gathering I then made my way across the bridge to Brooklyn and what has becoming the official Nomadness Tribe anniversary pre-party hosted by Tasty Keish.
