Social Media Samurai Year In Review: The Best Of Samurai Rides 2015
It’s been an amazing year for #SamuraiRides. The good people at DriveShop have put me in behind the wheels of some great vehicles. I can honestly say I didn’t have a bad experience with any of the rides I reviewed. As I prepare for the new fleet of cars for year 2016-2017 lets take a look back at some of the stand out experiences I had in the 2015. Having reviewed multiple cars of a few specific automotive brands I’ll share the best of each in this wrap up edition of Samurai Rides.
The annual Miami art festival Art Basel has kicked off and your over sized Social Media Samurai is en route to the 305, ready to bring the creative energy directly to you all. From the endless art display and live creation sessions in Wynwood to the exhibitions and launch events on Miami beach it’ll be no shortage of activity! Last night Swizz Beats opened the Dean Collection, a collabaration with Barcadi, which will be open for the duration of Art Basel.
Take a look at my coverage from last year if you’re new to the Art Basel experience and watch the #SocialMediaSamurai as well as that #SamuraiRides hashtag all weekend to keep connected.

Social Media is an amplifier. It’s an amplifier to a megaphone to people standing on soap boxes yelling hoping for reactions. Be it in business or personal, we are all trying to hear the right messages in the midst of noise, 24/7/365 digital static. I think that understanding the noise makes it easier to block out that which isn’t needed. One of the trends we need to be careful of is the self appointed spokesman syndrome.
In a nut shell, now that we all can easily tap into such a massive public audience, we feel compelled to make grand statements and assume a position of representative for others. I’m a Black man and as such I have experiences that connect me to other Black people and other men. That doesn’t mean I can attempt to speak for all of them.
The more you attempt to speak for others beyond yourself the more specific and focused you need to make your statement. “From my experiences” and “based on the discussions I’ve had” gives your position more realistic scope. People know this but admitting that kills the grandeur and value of whats being said.
If every “Men are dogs!!” claim was phrased “Every man I’ve dealt with is a dog.” Said person loses the message because it now turns more focus inward instead of on the group in question.
Generalizations are what we do as a society. I get it. It’s just how we communicate but that’s why some people truly stand out from the crowd as genuine leaders, spokespeople and advocates. Just because you can talk doesn’t mean you are good at communication. The ability to speak directly to the point with focus and direction isn’t a given. That skill is what the rare few have to lead businesses to success and communities to positive expansion.
99% of us can only speak for ourselves with any true certainty. It’s tempting to turn a simple personal viewpoint into a worldwide PSA. Fight the urge my friends. Let us speak for ourselves.
SAMURAI RIDES: FAST TIMES IN MAZDA’s 2016 MIATA GRAND TOURING
I’ve had the pleasure of getting very comfortable with the line of vehicles coming out of the Mazda camp this year. With the fall season not that far off I was curious if there were any other surprises on deck for 2016. My question was answered in the form of the 2016 Mazda Miata Grand Touring edition. This would put me in a brand new space dealing with a 2 person roadster vs the sedans and SUVs from previous reviews. I was beyond surprised at the results. Let me share the fun I had with Mazda’s newest sports car.
Let’s get the obvious out of the way. This is a small sports car. I make it a point to state my size in these reviews so you can get a true sense of the spacing within these cars. I’m 6 ft 5 inches tall and yes I do fit in this ride. It’s a snug fit but it wasn’t uncomfortable or painful. With the top up or down I fit fine. So for average sized individuals you’ll be good to go with space to spare.
Because of the compact make of the Miata understand this isn’t a car for going to do your weekly grocery shopping. The truck space is enough for a few small bags or one luggage piece. As I told a friend its ideal to pack if you’re going to the beach. On the inside there is no standard glove compartment. That space is relocated to a vertical stash space set between the 2 seats.
The Mazda faithful will be happy to see the familiar MAZDA CONNECT system with commander control knob. With my space limited this was very useful in my operating the various multimedia functions without have to reach around much. With the incredible sound system the Miata packs controlling the tunes smoothly is a must.
The charcoal gray leather with red stitching really gives the interior a mean race car appearance. The Miata is the personification of sleek and once you drop the top with is an easy 1 step function, you are ready to hit the road.
I can’t express enough how fun it was to drive this car. The Miata is fast and light. It hugs the road while giving you in and out maneuverability to handle any on road conditions. Yes you wont be packing it full of people but sometimes its cool to know its just you and the road or one special passenger to enjoy the ride with.
Being in New York there aren’t always ideal times to whip a sports car. City pot holes or bad weather often put a damper on things, but if you’re in the market for a fun summer car I wouldn’t hesitate to try out Mazda’s newly redesigned 2016 Miata Grand Touring.
SAMURAI RIDES: POWER PARTS EDITION W/ BFGOODRICH All-Terrain T/A® KO2 & g-Force™ COMP-2™ A/S TIRES
It’s been an active summer for Samurai Rides. In this edition we’re bringing something new to you and focusing specifically on some high performance tires. While we all know the importance of tires, few of us really get to dive into what makes one tire stand out from another. Before hoping into my next review vehicle I had the opportunity to link up with BFGoodrich during their NYC area stop of their Are You Driver Enough Tour. Geared specifically for auto part dealers this gave me a great crash course, no pun intended, of what goes into quality tires.
What I was excited about is that for all the driving I’ve done in my life I could only tell you but so much about tires. I do a little research but generally any purchases I made were budget driven. I’d get the best of what I can afford. In addition to that I think a lot of us just trust that what you’re getting is quality. We don’t have the opportunity to throw on tires and very test them out. That’s why I took so much joy in the BFGoodrich Are You Driver Enough Tour because it gave me the chance to see what various tires can do in extreme situations.
We put the All-Terrain T/A® KO2 Tires and the g-Force™ COMP-2™ A/S tires to the test to see just how much they stand out. The events of the day placed me on 2 courses. One course was wet and the other one was dry. Each course would have me accelerate at max speeds and hit a full and sudden stop. Following this I would peel out and continue through a quick hitting series of turns, 2 sharp lane changes and a final hard stop. All of this while trying not hit too many cones. Let’s just say I have new appreciation for racers.
On the wet track we were pushing Toyota Scions while on the dry surface we stepped up in power with a couple of Mustangs. It was quite an experience. After getting familiar with the cars I took my shot at the respective courses. The differences in grip, traction, braking time and take off on acceleration all were in the favor of the BFGoodrich tires.
As the lone media/consumer in a group of retailers I could really look at this from my personal perspective as a driver. These g-Force™ COMP-2™ A/S tires are ideal for the vehicles I find myself driving these days. I don’t see myself doing the speeds I was doing the track but I’d feel safer knowing the quality of the tires I’m riding on. Those All-Terrain T/A® KO2 tires make me miss my old SUV. That all terrain toughness is a must have having to take things off-road.
BFGoodrich is really bringing you top performance options here. Make sure you ask your local dealer to show you these new tires when the time for replacements arrive. You wont be sorry. Check out some the images for the days events below including some valuable info on the two new tires
Here’s A Free Social Media Day Offer from the Samurai
June 30th marks the 6th annual celebration of social media created by the good folk at Mashable. The digital tool of our age that has shrunk the planet, enlarged egos and connected the world like nothing else since the telephone. For me it’s a reminder to use this tool not only for personal gain for to help and empower others so that their voices can be heard.
To do my part in that mission I’m having a special one day offer for the people. As many of you know I offer consultations to help people get their digital business in order. Some people have the budget for it and some don’t which is totally understandable. While I can’t give the full 2 hour sit down for free If you have a specific social media question for your business hit me up and I’ll answer it and point you in the right direction. It’s the least I can do.
Enjoy your day and follow me on the sites below I’ll be sharing a lot of content today!!!
Travel is something that has been a part of life for many for years. Yet for the most part the media depiction of Urban travel(ers) has been a mix of tropical getaways and domestic parties in locales like Miami & Las Vegas. You would never know they people like us were in Asia, Europe or Australia just like everyone else. This misrepresentation is core to what birthed Nomadness. 4 years later there is a massive growth in the urban travel community.
Just as media is still in need of more diverse travel content the live conference space that connects and networks with the people and brands in the travel community is suffering from the same issue. If Nomadness shows the world anything, let be that when a space is nonexistent we will create it. From that same spark that formed the Nomadness Travel Tribe we give you NMDN.
On Sept 26th Nomadness presents a full day of travel workshops and panel discussions. NMDN is ideal for the modern traveler, the travel business person and more. We will be touching on all elements of travel culture the Nomadness.
That means more fun, creativity and style then your usual hotel conference room convention gathering. Get a peek at some of our panelists here on the NMDN IG page. Make sure you follow that and the NMDN Twitter page to stay up on all the needed updates.
Early bird tickets sales started today so don’t miss out on this event. It’s the beginning of a new day.
