Here’s A Free Social Media Day Offer from the Samurai

socialmediaday.logo.black

June 30th marks the 6th annual celebration of social media created by the good folk at Mashable. The digital tool of our age that has shrunk the planet, enlarged egos and connected the world like nothing else since the telephone. For me it’s a reminder to use this tool not only for personal gain for to help and empower others so that their voices can be heard.

To do my part in that mission I’m having a special one day offer for the people. As many of you know I offer consultations to help people get their digital business in order. Some people have the budget for it and some don’t which is totally understandable. While I can’t give the full 2 hour sit down for free If you have a specific social media question for your business hit me up and I’ll answer it and point you in the right direction. It’s the least I can do.

Enjoy your day and follow me on the sites below I’ll be sharing a lot of content today!!!

Travel is something that has been a part of life for many for years. Yet for the most part the media depiction of Urban travel(ers) has been a mix of tropical getaways and domestic parties in locales like Miami & Las Vegas. You would never know they people like us were in Asia, Europe or Australia just like everyone else. This misrepresentation is core to what birthed Nomadness. 4 years later there is a massive growth in the urban travel community.

Just as media is still in need of more diverse travel content the live conference space that connects and networks with the people and brands in the travel community is suffering from the same issue. If Nomadness shows the world anything, let be that when a space is nonexistent we will create it.  From that same spark that formed the Nomadness Travel Tribe we give you NMDN.

Street Drama 101: All Criminal Masterminds Are Suckers For Love

Street Drama 101: All Criminal Masterminds Are Suckers For Love

I’m a fan of the Starz original series Power. The tale of Ghost, a street hustler trying to walk the line between criminal success and being an honest citizen has me hooked. This nation has always loved gangsters. We’re drawn to the idea of winning by breaking the rules, so like the many stories before it we watch Power deep down rooting for the bad guys. Unfortunately, like Tony “Scarface” Montana (with his sister) or Casino’s Frank Rothstein (with his wife), Ghost’s fate has been sealed by an ill-fated reunion with his childhood sweet heart Angela. Another genius of the streets with a fatal female weakness. How many times have we seen this story?

Beyond that, this level of insanely blinding  love/lust flies right in the face of the plot facts these stories presented to set up the lead character. I also can’t help but think it does a greater disservice to the viewer. Lets look a little deeper. From the biblical tales of Adam & Eve, Samson & Delilah and more we’ve been presented a repetitive theme of women being the source of male downfall. Time and time again men in highly advantageous positions see it all  turn to ash by trusting or caring too much for a woman.

The number running brilliance of Sam”Ace” Rothstein couldn’t protecting from falling for the unstable “Ginger”.

The gimmick has gotten stale. Does it happen in life? Yes, there is folk who have let their infatuations lead them down the wrong path but it’s truthfully no more an issue then a woman who falls for a no good guy or any person that lets the lust for power and money corrupt his/her judgement. These classic plot devices just don’t hit with the sense of reality needed to really connect with the people.

Tony Montana’s curious love for his sister led to his partners death and the fall of his empire

In the case of Power we are front row for both of the main characters Ghost and Tommy abandoning common sense after women enter their lives. That’s not even taking into account that Ghost is married with children. Both of these men violate basic street codes that have now put their entire empire in jeopardy from threats seen and unseen.

Maybe the upcoming episodes and the already approved 3rd season of Power will provide the type of plot twist I crave but for the moment we’ve been served up another round of “whatever you do don’t trust those women” or “M.O.B” as the streets would put it. Women aren’t the enemy and while I know this is fictional entertainment I’d love to see a different outcome to what is shaping up to be another predictable fall from criminal greatness.

I saw you do your thing last year at the SOURCE360 lady’s night event at BAM. You seem very comfortable on the stage and on camera. Has that always been the case?

Thank you! I definitely think so. I practically grew up on stages: beauty pageants, talent shows, this game show on ABC Family, public speaking & poetry jams … I’ve done cheerleading and dance competitions, worked at Disney as a character performer … I’m just one of those people that loves to entertain and relate to people, say profound things, provoke feelings. It’s my calling.

Do you have any mentors in this game? Who do you turn that to to help direct your path?

Sort of! I’m a very independent little trailblazer at heart, so I rely on my own wisdom & instincts more than anything. But there are people here to help guide me when I need it, & others have dropped amazing gems on me along the way. I’d say 6th Sense, 88-Keys, Ski Beatz, Rah Digga and my boy Ace are always on call when I need some direction.

We’re half way into 2015. What has the year taught/showed you thus far both personally and professionally?

I guess I’ve learned to be extremely tolerant. You know, when you ask the universe for patience, I don’t think some patience just drops into your soul, but instead you get put into a situation where you have to practice an acceptance of your reality. I’ve had a turbulent past 12 months; relocating at least 4 times, employing a new team of advisers, reinventing my entire brand. It’s been quite the process trying to restructure my world & execute the vision I have for myself. But I’m still rocking these shows, shooting videos & recording new material. I’m rolling with the frustrations, staying connected to my fans and preparing for my season every day. And once that time comes, it’ll be well worth the wait.

Connection is a major thing. I think in today’s era of social media it’s what separates a mere product or personality from a true brand. How do you connect with your fans?

I totally agree. The dope thing is, your fans just have to really like YOU. The person, the personality, the demeanor. The music is the soundtrack to your brand, but I think who you are is what keeps people interested. I haven’t been able to release a new project in about a year, but with social media, I can maintain visibility & still touch fans while I work on my master plan. What are my personal hobbies? What current events do I find important, or funny, or upsetting? What friends, family or teachers occupy my world? What am I working on in the studio?

Can We Do What We Want To Do????

Can We Do What We Want To Do????

whatever-i-can-do-what-i-want

The older I get the more elements of the past seem to reemerge with deeper meaning then when I originally encountered them. I was recently drawn into a conversation about similarities between the Jenner Sex Change and Rachel Race Claim stories. It was more of a listening session on my part but the chat did spark a thought in me. I don’t personally view these situations as being the same once you look at the details and circumstances but to a degree there is a common theme of people identifying with something that they physically were not born as.

This made me ask “Can we truly be anything we want to be?” As the classic In Living Color theme song says. “You can do what you wanna do” and that really does seem to be the theme these days. The phrase I see being used greatly now is “He/She/They are living their truth.” That sounds great and generally is but clearly in these 2 recent cases there are particulars and exceptions. The reality is that a person’s truth has to exist within the common good and honest representation of life. As much as we like to think otherwise our actions affect others. We’re a society of people. As such there is a limit to what “your truth” can be before you receive push back.

For years society has tried to tell us all who we are and what we’re worth. As we struggle to balance out those aging views with more open-minded accepting beliefs I wonder where the line gets drawn. I believe that all people deserve fair and equal lives. I don’t believe that being fair and equal that everyone has to agree and share the same beliefs and life views. Those differences are what make us the society we are. We’re in a very sensitive and critical period in time. These situations are highlighting struggles that have decades of emotional history behind them. I think Dave Chappelle had the right take on this. He chimed in this past weekend with the following.

“The thing that the media’s gotta be real careful about, that they’re kind of overlooking, is the emotional context of what she means,” Chappelle said thoughtfully, between drags of American Spirit cigarettes. “There’s something that’s very nuanced where she’s highlighting the difference between personal feeling and what’s construct as far as racism is concerned. I don’t know what her agenda is, but there’s an emotional context for black people when they see her and white people when they see her. There’s a lot of feelings that are going to come out behind what’s happening with this lady. And she’s just a person, no matter how we feel about her.” – Source

What are you’re thoughts on these situations? Are we free to do, be and identify as whatever we want?

Is Discipline By Digital Embarrassment Solid Parenting?

Is Discipline By Digital Embarrassment Solid Parenting?

Dislike Holzstempel

The law of the land was very simple when I was a kid. Behave, do your school work and don’t make a spectacle of yourself. I was never a problem child but at some points a kid is going to act up and push the limits and when that happened I knew what was coming. “Just wait ’til your Father gets home” was a reality in my household. Beatings were a last level of punishment but never done in excess. Spare the rod spoil the child may seem like “abuse” to some these days but please believe I’d take that any day of the week over the antics that many parents are applying today.

It’s often said that kids are being given access to social media at too young an age. Consequently they aren’t grown enough to fully understand the ramifications from their actions but that applies to many of these “parents” as well. Many adults are taking punishment of their kids to a new level by posting said discipline on the internet. I get that idea of trying to teach them a lesson where they interact but there is a crucial flaw in this plan. When I was bad I was punished within the confines of my home. These were teachable private moments between myself and my family. My parents would always talk to me afterwards to make sure there was understanding as to what was done and why. I could not imagine what my growth process would have been like if my punishments were publicized. The most that might happen is being grounded and having to tell your immediate friends you can’t come outside.

crazymom

The true issue is that social media has NO RULES you are creating a vulnerable situation that will now live forever. In addition to that, posting a crazy hair cut, a beating or whatever punishment is essentially handing it over to others to do with as they see fit. Bullying was always an issue of growing up but it seems that the digital firepower that social media can become pushes many over the limit. Why add to that? Discipline should match the violation but even when you as the parent return things to normal who says that your child’s peers will do the same. Your brilliant idea to publicly shame your child may create an going social issue that lingers long after you thought the lesson was learned. What then? What do you do once your “genius” parenting move goes viral and a grade school kid can’t function socially because thousands of people are laughing at him?

Simply put its massive overkill. Social media has become so ingrained within the practices of some folk that they simply do not know how to do anything that does not have a “Let me show you” element to it. The time between think and post seems to be decreasing. For many the process actually takes place in reverse with the action of posting then being followed up with thought on what was just done. We need our parents out there to be smarter. This is exposing your kids. It is teaching them that when someone does something they don’t like it is an acceptable act to seek public embarrassment of that person. That is what leads to boys sharing images of girls they once liked. Pubic shame is a highly destructive tool and many adults don’t realize the role they are playing in conditioning their youth in this way of thinking and in turn causing trauma for them and others.
